There is a saying that we do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.
Yet if we are honest, the planet is sending us clear signals that something is wrong.
The rains no longer arrive when farmers expect them. Rivers that once flowed year-round are shrinking. Floods are becoming more frequent in some communities, while others struggle with prolonged heat and drought. Trees that stood for decades are disappearing, and with them, the biodiversity and livelihoods they supported.
These changes are not happening somewhere far away. They are happening here, in our neighborhoods, villages, farms, and cities.
On this World Environment Day, we are reminded that the environment is not just about forests, wildlife, or climate statistics. It is about people.
It is about the farmer who depends on healthy soil to feed a family.
It is about the child who deserves clean air to breathe and safe water to drink.
It is about the young person who dreams of a future where communities can thrive without sacrificing the natural resources that sustain them.
At the Centre for Grassroots Sustainability and Sovereignty (C4GSS), we have seen firsthand that environmental change begins with ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
It begins when a school decides to plant trees and teach children about climate responsibility.
It begins when a family starts a small garden and learns to grow nutritious food sustainably.
It begins when community members come together to clean their surroundings, protect natural resources, and advocate for a healthier future.
These actions may seem small, but they are powerful.
After all, every forest starts with a seed.
Every movement starts with a conversation.
Every lasting change starts with a decision.
The environmental challenges we face today can sometimes feel overwhelming. Climate change, pollution, deforestation, and food insecurity are complex issues. But history has repeatedly shown that communities are not powerless. When people are informed, empowered, and united around a common purpose, remarkable things happen.
This World Environment Day, we encourage everyone to take one meaningful step toward protecting our shared home.
Plant a tree.
Reduce waste.
Support local farmers.
Teach a child about nature.
Conserve water.
Join a community initiative.
Speak up for environmental justice.
And if none of these are possible today, simply spend a few moments outdoors appreciating the natural world that quietly supports every aspect of our lives.
The truth is that the Earth does not need saving from us. The Earth will continue.
What we are really protecting is our future.
The future of our children.
The future of our communities.
The future of our planet.
This World Environment Day, let us choose action over apathy, hope over despair, and responsibility over indifference.
Because the future we want begins with the choices we make today.
Happy World Environment Day from all of us at the Centre for Grassroots Sustainability and Sovereignty (C4GSS).
Together, we can build a greener future for all.
